Identify your model, then follow the four stages
Most Alexa setup sessions do not stall because a step is difficult. They stall because a single piece of information — the exact network name, the correct passphrase format, or one mobile permission — was not gathered before the process began.

The three items to gather first
Each stage below depends on information collected here. Gathering all three before opening any application is the single change that most affects how the session goes.

Four stages, in sequence
Each stage has a defined entry condition and a defined completion signal. Open one to read it; the bar above tracks how far through you are.
01 Application preparationInstall, sign in, grant permissions
Entry conditionA phone or tablet with an active internet connection.
The application used to onboard an Echo device is the Alexa app, published by the device manufacturer and distributed through your phone's standard app marketplace. Confirm three things before beginning: the application is installed and current, you are signed in to the account you intend the speaker to be registered to, and the operating-system permissions have been granted.
Account choice matters more than it first appears. The account signed in during onboarding becomes the account the device is registered to, and it determines which household, music services and shared settings the device inherits. Changing it afterwards is possible but involves re-registration.
Completion signalThe application opens to its device management area and lists any devices already registered.
02 Network selectionChoosing the network, entering the passphrase
Entry conditionStage 1 complete; network name and passphrase to hand.
Band selection. Echo and Echo Dot models are dual-band and can use either signal. Where a router publishes separate names per band, the 2.4 GHz name is generally the better selection for a speaker sitting some distance from the router — not because the hardware lacks 5 GHz, but because 2.4 GHz carries further and passes through walls with less loss.
Mesh and extender behaviour. Mesh systems typically publish one unified name and assign bands internally, so only one entry appears and there is no band choice to make. Standalone range extenders often publish a separate suffixed name, which places a device joined to it on a different broadcast from one joined to the router directly.
Passphrase entry. Type the passphrase manually rather than pasting it, and use the reveal control to confirm every character before continuing. Copy-paste frequently carries an invisible trailing space.
Completion signalThe application accepts the credentials and moves to pairing.
03 PairingThe handover of credentials to the speaker
Entry conditionStages 1 and 2 complete; speaker powered and within range of both the phone and the router.
During pairing the application establishes a direct short-range link to the Echo device, transfers the network credentials you supplied, and instructs the speaker to join that network. Two conditions make the stage reliable: keep the phone close to the speaker throughout, and leave the application in the foreground with the screen awake. Backgrounding the app or letting the screen lock can suspend the process.
Echo devices report their state through a coloured light ring — a light bar on Echo Show and Echo Pop models. During initial setup this commonly shows an orange tone. A passive colour reference is available in the Status Light Colour Reference.
Completion signalThe application reports that the speaker has joined the network.
04 Final handoverName, room, groups and preferences
Entry conditionStage 3 complete.
The final stage assigns identity and context: the device name used in voice requests, the room it belongs to, whether it joins multi-device groups, its default music and news sources, and its language and region.
This is the stage most often rushed, and the one that most affects daily use. Naming conventions become significant the moment a second device is added — guidance is in Multi-Room Addition & Naming.

The questions readers most often arrive with. Each one expands.
Does an Echo have to use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?
No. Mainstream Echo and Echo Dot models are dual-band and support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, older generations included. The advice to prefer 2.4 GHz is about reach rather than a limitation in the hardware.
A speaker on a kitchen counter two walls from the router benefits from the band that travels further. One sitting beside the router does not need it.
Can the first connection be made from a computer?
Not for initial onboarding. The application establishes a short-range direct link to the speaker before any Wi-Fi is involved, and a desktop browser has no access to that radio in the way the process requires.
A phone or tablet is necessary. A browser interface, where one exists, is for account and settings management after the device is already connected.
What happens to the passphrase after setup?
It is stored in the speaker's own memory. That is why the device rejoins by itself after a power interruption, and why moving it between rooms requires nothing further.
It is also why a device being passed to someone else should be removed from the account first — until then it still holds the network credentials.
Does changing the router mean setting up again?
In almost every case, yes. A replacement router usually publishes a different network name, which the speaker has never been told about, and it has no means of learning the new details independently.
The same applies after a passphrase change or a house move. Nothing has failed; the onboarding sequence simply runs again from Stage 1.
Do multiple speakers each need separate setup?
Yes. Each device holds its own copy of the network credentials, and there is no facility to copy them from a device already working.
Subsequent devices are usually quicker, since the application and its permissions are already in place. Naming conventions are covered in Multi-Room Addition.
