Readiness before the session begins
Preparation is front-loaded for a reason. Every item below is straightforward on its own; each becomes disproportionately awkward when discovered partway through a process that has already started.
The readiness checklist

Power and placement
No model in the Echo range carries a battery. Each requires a continuous mains connection, which makes the position of the nearest socket a genuine constraint on where a speaker can live.
Use the power adapter supplied in the box. Adapters are matched to the current draw of the specific model, and a substitute rated below that draw can result in a device that appears to start and then behaves inconsistently — a condition easily mistaken for a network problem.
Placement affects two separate things. During pairing, proximity between phone and speaker matters, because the initial handshake runs over a short-range link. Afterwards, proximity to the router matters, because that is the connection the speaker keeps. A position convenient for one is not necessarily convenient for the other; the pairing stage can be completed near the router and the speaker moved afterwards.
Avoid metal enclosures, cabinet interiors, positions behind large appliances, and locations adjacent to water tanks or substantial plumbing. Each attenuates signal materially, and the effect is invisible until it is measured.
Information gathering
The two items that most often interrupt a session are the network name and the passphrase. Both are usually printed on a label affixed to the router body, in small type, on a device installed in a position chosen for cable routing rather than for reading.
Retrieving them once, in advance, is a small task. Retrieving them partway through an active session, while an application waits, is where people abandon the attempt.
If the passphrase was changed at any point after installation, the printed label is no longer current. The active value is held in the router's administration interface, or with whoever performed the change.

Time and interruption
The onboarding sequence is not resumable in the way modern software has trained people to expect. It runs over a short-range link that closes when the application is backgrounded, and an interruption during the final stage generally means beginning again.
A new device commonly downloads and installs a software update on first connection, during which it may not respond for several minutes. This is expected behaviour and not a stall. Leaving it powered and returning shortly is the appropriate response; interrupting mains power during that period is the one action that reliably causes a repeat.
Allowing an uninterrupted window — rather than fitting the session between other tasks — is worth more than any individual preparation item.

How long should be set aside?
A prepared session is short — most of the elapsed time is the device starting up and downloading its first update rather than anything requiring attention.
An unprepared session is unbounded, because it pauses whenever a missing item has to be retrieved.
Can a third-party power adapter be used?
The adapter supplied in the box is matched to that model's current draw. A substitute rated below it can produce inconsistent behaviour that resembles a network problem and is not one.
Does the speaker need to stay near the router permanently?
It needs adequate signal at its permanent location, which is not the same as being near the router. The pairing stage can be completed close to the router and the speaker relocated afterwards.
What if the passphrase cannot be found at all?
The router's administration interface holds the active value, and access to that interface is documented by the router manufacturer or the internet provider who supplied it. Neither this publication nor any third party can retrieve it.
Is a second person useful?
For a router in an awkward position, yes — one person reading the label while another types removes the most common transcription errors.
